Is It Better to Re-key or Change Locks?
Be it your cell phone, social media accounts or laptop, changing your locks and passwords regularly is a security measure that is highly recommended. The same holds true for your home as well.
Whether it’s a house you have just moved into or a home you have lived in all your life, changing your locks or rekeying them is something you must do for the sake of security.
The first thing you must do when moving into a new home is to change the locks as there is no guarantee that you are the only one with a key to your home. The question that you need to ask yourself is this – “Whether to rekey or whether to change locks?”
When to Rekey
Rekeying your locks would mean that you are modifying the mechanism of the lock-in such a way that the old key will not be able to open it anymore and a new key will be required to unlock it. There are certain situations where rekeying your locks would be a better, smarter and more economical option, for instance, you can rekey your locks in such a way that the same key unlocks it, if all your locks are of the same brand, or if they all have the same kind of keyhole.
Rekeying is also a good option if you have misplaced a copy of your old key and you are apprehensive that it might fall into the wrong hands and the security of your home might be breached. Rekeying your locks is an economical way of making sure that you and your family are the only people with keys to your new home as one can never be too sure if more copies of those keys have been obtained by someone else.
When to Change a Lock
Changing a lock is all about “Out with the old and in with the new”. What it basically entails is the removal of the old door-locking mechanism and hardware. This is then replaced with new hardware resulting in a fresh set of brand-new locks and keys corresponding to each of those locks.
Changing locks, however, is an expensive proposition and one that should only be undertaken when absolutely necessary, such as when the lock is old and worn down or even if it is outdated. In such cases, it would make sense to switch over to more modern, up to date and secure electronic locks to ensure protection and safety.
How much is your budget?
In most cases, the budget becomes the main determinant of whether or not one ends up going through with the rekeying procedure of decides to have the locks replaced. If the security has not been ever compromised of if the locks have never been damaged, the low costs of rekeying might be more appealing than the cost of replacing the entire lockset.
